Somers Lacrosse Advances with Win Over Old Saybrook

The Somers High School boys lacrosse team advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament on Saturday.

The top seeded Spartans boys lacrosse team defeated the No. 8 Old Saybrook Rams 19-6 on Saturday in the quarterfinals of the CIAC state tournament.

Mike Hanna, Zach Thresher, and Neil Cardwell each had hat-tricks for the Spartans while Dan McDonald, Nick Marrocchini, and Matt Garcia also contributed with two goals each. Donny Whittle, Tyler Russell, Garrett Ficara, and Cullen Roberts also scored for Somers. Ten different players scored for the Spartans on Saturday.

Somers started the game with 6-0 lead midway through the second quarter before the Rams finally found the back of the net. Mike Neas scored for Old Saybrook to get them on the score sheet, but the Spartans would answer right back with a beautiful play which eventually led to Marrocchini’s first goal.  Thresher and Russell had two quick passes and Russell eventually found Marrocchini all alone next to the net for an easy goal.

The Rams would not go away though and would have an answer of their own when Teddy Gudis beat Somers goalie Daniel Bell on a hard shot that snuck in under the crossbar. However, the Spartans fire power was too much for the Rams and Marrocchini would score on a nifty behind the back shot to bring the score to 8-2.

Somers would take an 11-2 lead into the half after three more goals from Thresher, Garcia and Hanna.

Somers will play the winner of No 4. Ledyard and No. 12 St. Joseph in the semifinals on Wednesday. The site and time are still to be determined.
