Somers Baseball Drops Close Game to Windsor Locks

The Spartans had an opportunity to tie the game but couldn't push the run across.

The Somers High School baseball team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to visiting Windsor Locks on Wednesday.

In the top of the seventh inning, Windsor Locks got a single from Rob Walters, then Khamri Thomas singled, moving Walters to second. John Oliveira sacrifice bunted them over to give the Raiders second and third with one out. Walters scored on a wild pitch during the next at bat.

Somers was lead off in the bottom of seventh by a double from Justin Erickson. He made it to third with no outs on a wide throw by the Windsor Locks catcher as he tried to pick Erickson off second.

However, the Spartans couldn't get him across and the game ended in a Windsor Locks victory.

Mike Gentile pitched for the Raiders, walking two and striking out 15. Thomas was 3-for-4 and Zach Weigert was 2-for-3 for the Raiders.

For Somers, Adam Donovan struck out eight and walked three. Erickson, Austin Ficara, and Brian Hollister had the hits for Somers. Ficara also had two steals and Hollister had one.

Somers (7-4) travels to Avon on Thursday. Windsor Locks (8-3) will host Stafford on Friday.
