Somers Baseball Advances to State Quarterfinals

Spartans reach the elite eight with 8-5 win at Portland.

Somers continued its run through the Class S baseball tournament Wednesday, downing host Portland 8-5.

The Spartans scored three runs in the fourth inning and four in the fifth to open up an 8-2 advantage en route to a berth in the quarterfinals Friday at top-ranked Cromwell.

Tom Conlon provided the big blow, smashing a three-run homer in the fourth off Portland pitcher Nick Adamsons. Mike Casciano had homered in the first inning for the Spartans.

Casciano, Austin Ficara, Brian Hollister and Justin Erickson each had two hits for Somers. Casciano and Hollister each scored twice, while Brian Rossini knocked in a pair of runs.

For Portland, Josh Scovill had two hits and scored twice, Adamsons had two hits and Hayden Manning drove in two runs.

Hollister was the winning pitcher, and Adam Donovan earned a save.
