Somers Girls Soccer Falls to Avon 2-0

Somers Girls Soccer dropped to 2-2-0 on the season with a hard fought 2-0 loss to defending Class L State Champions Avon at Somers High School Friday afternoon. Avon broke a scoreless tie with a goal from Britt Douglass midway through the first half off a direct kick from midfield that was poorly handled by Somers defense. This was one of their few mistakes on the day. Avon continued to dominate play and goalie Hailee Stetson was up to the challenge, controlling the goal area with aggressive challenges. The defense led by Julie Folger, Kristen Steidler and Sammy Percoski limited Avon to mostly long distance shots and bottled up the middle for the remainder of the first half.
Somers, which started the game with just three substitutes due to injuries and illnesses, lost another player to a head injury in the second half. The Spartans refused to quit and battled Avon evenly much of the second half. Avon scored their second goal on a long shot on a tough angle by Hannah Davey that escaped Stetson's reach. Despite the heat and the intensity of the game, Somers continued to press forward and got outstanding efforts from Tori Laires, Bridget Logan and Erin Pfeifer but were unable to strike back. The final score remained 2-0 and Stetson was credited with 22 saves in her best game of the young season.
Somers gets back on the field, hosting East Granby Monday at Somers High School.
