Volunteers Needed To Clear Ice and Snow From Roofs

Ellington Superintendent Stephen Cullinan is asking for the public's help in clearing the roofs of the schools.

With all the ice and snow that we have received lately, buildings all across the state have succumbed to the weight and have collapsed or have suffered structural damage.

For the last two days, there has been no school in Ellington while crews - who have been working since last weekend - have cleared the roofs of the schools.

Superintendent Stephen Cullinan is now asking for the public's help. Cullinan has now sent out an e-mail - and has also left voice messages - saying that the district has been informed by its insurance provider that it may accept volunteer assistance in the snow removal effort.

The e-mail states that a volunteer is at least 16 years of age and that if someone incurs any medical expense, as a result of the service, their medical expenses will be covered up to $10,000. It also states that a volunteer is not an employee, so worker’s compensation is not provided.

If you are willing and able to assist, you are asked to report to the head custodian at any of the five schools.

Volunteers are asked to bring a shovel or snowblower if possible.

Crews will be working today until approximately 5 p.m. Crews will also be working both tomorrow and Sunday, starting at 9 a.m.

Cullinan says to feel free to report for as long or short of a time period as you wish.
