Somers Resident Wins Scholarship, Advances to National Competition

Somers resident Kyle Talbot was recently named a Universal Technical Institute (UTI), scholarship winner for his successful efforts in the Diesel Equipment Technology Competition at A.I. Prince Technical High School in Hartford.

Talbot, who attends attends Howell Cheney Technical High School in Manchester, was awarded a $10,000 scholarship for achieving the gold level award in the SkillsUSA Connecticut event, a "showcase for the best career and technical students in the nation," according to its Web site.

“This kind of competition motivates students and allows them to test the knowledge and skills they’ve learned in our program,” said Jousette Caro, Dean of Students and Work Based Learning Program Coordinator at Cheney.

Talbot will now advance to the national SkillsUSA Championship in June in Kansas City, MO.

“Our students do exceptionally well at the SkillsUSA State competition, which is a credit to Cheney’s program and staff,” said Joseph Hollay, head of the Cheney's Diesel and Heavy Equipment Repair.
