Ellington Closes Out East Granby; Somers Holds Off East Windsor

Knights girls basketball team holds off a tough East Granby team. Spartans win a close one on the road.

The girls basketball team opened up a close game in the fourth quarter and defeated host East Granby 58-46 on Friday night.

Ellington led 37-32 going into the fourth quarter and East Granby made quick two baskets to close the lead to one point. East Granby then missed the go-ahead shot and couldn't get over the hump.

From there, it was all Ellington.

"They sent us to the line a number of times and we made some great rebounds and put backs to put the game away," Ellington coach Lauren Lovetere-Beeler said.

Kelly Conley scored 25 points for Ellington and Julie Gage had 13 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

Savannah Kresge had 13 points and Megan Milliken added 10 rebounds for the Knights (7-3).

Nina Zagaja, Dani Davis, and Kayleigh Dumas each had 12 points for East Granby (6-3).

Ellington travels to East Windsor on Tuesday.

Somers 

Host East Windsor had a chance to tie or win the game against but couldn't do it as the Spartans pulled off a 58-56 victory on Friday night.

Ashley Kinney was fouled with nine seconds to go and made both freethrow to give Somers the 58-56 lead. East Windsor lost control of the ball with three seconds left under the basket, and could not get a good shot off as the buzzer sounded.

After East Windsor jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter, Kinney scored eight points to bring the Spartans within two points  at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Kinney led the way with a three-pointer and went 4-6 from the stripe as Somers went up as many as eight points. East Windsor closed the half with a 5-0 run to cut the Somers lead to 29-26 at the half.

In the third quarter, every Somers run was met by an East Windsor run, but the Spartans managed to maintain a 4-6 point lead and ended the quarter up four points.

The fourth quarter was much the same, as Somers took advantage of East Windsor foul trouble and went to the freethrow line 24 times, making 15 to keep the Panthers from making a continued run. In the last two minutes of the game, two Somers turnovers led to four quick points by East Windsor to tie the game at 56 with a little under a minute left.

Somers managed to take time off the clock to 22 seconds, and after a time-out, Kinney was fouled and made the shots that put the game away.

Kinney had 25 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and five steals. Samantha Urbon had seven points and 10 rebounds for the Spartans.

Kayla Stetson and Kayla Renaud each added seven points in the win.

Maira Pantoja led the way for East Windsor (4-6) with 12 points. Kayla Herson, Kelly Strba, and Briana Matteson each scored nine points in the loss. 

Somers (3-7) hosts Lyman Memorial on Tuesday.
