Fire Department Makes Donation to Church

The Somers Fire Department held a pancake breakfast to benefit the fire ravaged church, and on Monday, it presented the pastor with a check.

On Monday evening, the presented Rev. Barry Cass, pastor of , with a check from its two weeks ago.

The proceeds of the breakfast netted $844, and another $614 was collected from the donation jar at the door. The $1,458 will go towards helping the church rebuild after its .

“We’re just extremely grateful to the fire department again – still – for all that they’ve done,” Cass said. “From the time the first alarm came in until now.”

The breakfast at the firehouse, which cost $5 for admission, was so packed that some people were standing, and others were eating in the conference room. Over 300 people, 345 to be exact, attended the breakfast.

“It exceeded any pancake breakfast we’ve ever had,” Chief Gary Schiessl said. “It was a great turnout. We appreciate the townspeople joining in. I had certainly hoped for a good number like that.”

Schiessl said that he had anticipated a lot of people after hearing about a good turnout at the .

“It turned out well,” he said. “We had a lot of volunteers here, knowing that we would have a bigger turnout than usual.”

The department normally has four or five pancake breakfasts a year, and they’re normally for fire department fundraising. They decided to switch it up this time around.

“We felt that this time, it made sense to provide it for the church,” Schiessl said.
