July 2

Karen M. Arruda, 29, of 20 Dorothy St. in Hartford, was arrested after her vehicle was observed stopped on Route 83 in Somers and she exited the vehicle to retrieve CD’s from the trunk. Arruda failed several field sobriety tests and was arrested. She was also operating under suspension and was in possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. Arruda was released on a $1,500 non-surety bond and given a court date of July 13.

A vehicle carrying three Somers residents and a Tolland resident was traveling in the center lane of three on I-84 westbound, approximately one mile west of exit 68 in Tolland. A vehicle carrying two Manchester residents was also traveling in the center lane ahead of the other vehicle. The westbound traffic slowed for an unknown reason and the first vehicle attempted to avoid rear-ending the vehicle ahead of it. The driver of the car with the Somers and Tolland residents swerved and lost control. As the vehicle slid across the highway, it struck the driver’s side of the Manchester residents' vehicle, causing minor damage to it. The first car then continued westbound and traveled off the left shoulder and overtuened as it traveled down a slight embankment. All occupants of the vehicle were uninjured however, the driver, a 25 year-old Somers man, had minor lacerations to his elbow and knee but declined medical treatment. Both Manchester men, ages 40 and 27, complained of back pain and were transported Rockville General Hospital via Tolland Ambulance. The driver of the first vehicle was issued an infraction for failure to maintain proper lane.

A 63 year-old Somers man was entering the plaza located at 48 South Rd. in Somers via a one way entrance. He did not see any vehicles coming in either direction as he made a left hand turn to enter the parking area. However, he also did not see the pedestrian in the roadway in front of his vehicle and he struck the pedestrian. The 37 year-old Stafford Springs woman was transpored to Johnson Memorial Hospital for minor scrapes and bruises. Due to the slow speed involved, there was no damage to the man's vehicle and only minor injury to the woman. The case is under investigation.
