Ellington Fire Department Teaches Fire Safety

During the Safety Town program, the Ellington Fire Department taught preschool children about fire safety, showed them the equipment, and let them tour a fire truck.

On Wednesday during the annual Safety Town program, the taught preschool children about fire safety, showed the children fire equipment, and let them tour a firetruck.

Captain Brendan Burke, Assistant Chief Vince Gambacorta, and volunteer firefighter Valerie Adams talked to the children about what to do in the event of fire, and Adams put on all the equipment to give the children a view of a fully dressed firefighter.

The presentation included a video from Sparky the firedog on proper ways to handle fires and how to tell when there is a fire.

Chantal Haracsy, who helps run the Saftety Town program, said that it is very popular, with all the spaces traditionally being filled.

The program, which is in its sixth year, runs two one-week sessions in late July and presents police, ambulance and fire departments to preschool children.

Some of the issues that are discussed during the week are fire prevention, poison control, walking in parking lots and streets, bus and car safety, stranger awareness, and playground safety.

Children get to talk to police, firefighters, EMTs, and bus drivers about safety and also get to see their vehicles.

On Thursday, the children will see a presentation from the , and Safety Town will end Friday with a ride on a school bus.
