In an era of big box supermarkets like Super Stop & Shop, Walmart and Target, the small Geissler’s Supermarket chain keeps chugging along.

Geissler’s, which started in East Windsor, is marking 90 years of doing business locally with a month-long celebration that kicked off on Saturday.

The celebration took place at its East Windsor location, and featured a cake cutting with Mary Geissler Nilsson, daughter of the store’s founder.

The first 90 customers were given a Geissler’s reusable shopping bag “filled with goodies,” according to Geissler’s Marketing Coordinator Carol Carlson. Also, from 10 a.m to 2 p.m., the store handed out a variety of samples and did demonstrations.

The six other area supermarkets will have a similar day scheduled throughout April (see the listing below). The one in Somers will take place on Saturday.

Somers First Selectwoman Lisa Pellegrini said that the town wishes Geissler’s congratulations on its 90th anniversary.
“We are very happy to have them as part of the community,” she said. “Their excellent service, convenient location and high quality and affordable items are the reasons that I shop there every three or four days. They also are proud sponsors of the Somers Education Foundation and we greatly appreciate their support of the foundation.”

Carlson said that Geissler’s has endured through a simple formula of delivering high-quality products at competitive prices.

“It’s customer service,” Carlson said. “It’s fresh meats, bakery items and the deli. We don’t just try to move in bulk. We have good quality.”

Jim Richards, speaking as the executive director of the East Windsor Chamber of Commerce, a town selectman and president of the East Windsor Education Foundation, said that Geissler’s has been an integral part of the community.

“Geissler’s and the entire Geissler’s family have been instrumental to so many community events and programs, we can’t wait for the next 90 years,” Richards said.

April 13 - Somers

April 15 - Windsor
