Holiday Home Stretch for Food Pantry Donations

A local union has donated another $700.

The Hockanum Valley Community Council's Food Pantry continues to be on the receiving end of local generosity this holiday season.

This week, it was $700 from AFSMCE Local 1471, which represents Vernon's Public Works, Water Pollution Control Authority, Animal Control and Parks and Recreation employees.

Local 1471 also donated $500 for Thanksgiving.

HVCC chief executive David Engelson said he is forever thankful for donations like that. But he also has his game face on because the agency wants to hand out 900 to 975 Christmas dinner baskets to area needy families.

He said items needed immediately are:

• Quick bread mixes.

• Canned yams.

• Large boxes of instant mashed potatoes.

• Boxes and Bags of stuffing.

Engelson said boxes or bags of candy and christmas napkins could be used to supplement the meals.

Food Drop-offs are accepted at the pantry, located at 29 Naek Road in Vernon, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Cash, checks and gift cards are also accepted.

The pantry can be reached at 860-872-7727.
