Media Associate / Veterans Outreach Coordinator

As the Media Associate, Peter manages the Broadcast Center at the Center for New Media; edit suites, audio production room, radio station, Green Room, Master Control, and Production Studio. He oversees the Broadcast Communications/Multimedia facilities technological needs in the area of audio, video, and computer technology in support of the instructional functions of Middlesex Community College.

Peter supports a wide range of technology-based media for instructing students, staff, and faculty, which include: digital video recording, editing, audio recording, and transmission. He develops and produces programs and products in these multi-media areas, as well as assist and advises faculty, students and staff in their own productions, keeping up with the newest technologies. He certifies the students on all of the new broadcast equipment and sits with them one on one to help them understand the program applications while working on their projects.

He manages and leads support staff and student workers in production assistance tasks, creates their work schedule and trains them in their duties. Peter has two part time staff employees and between 8-10 student workers each semester.

Peter joined MxCC in 2004 as a Media Assistant and just after two years, in 2006, he was recognized for doing far more then that position required and was promoted to Media Associate. (Media Specialist)

In 2007, Peter was on a committee to have an OASIS Center built on campus for veteran students. On November 17, 2010, Middlesex Community College opened its Veterans’ OASIS Center. OASIS stands for "Operation Academic Support for Incoming Service-members" and is located in the Jean Burr Smith Library in Chapman Hall. OASIS Centers were developed to help returning veterans transition back into civilian life. They provide a welcoming location where veterans can meet, socialize, study, and support each other. The center is also a resource for important information on state and federal veteran benefits programs.

In the Spring 2011 semester, Peter Galgano, as MxCC Veterans’ Outreach Coordinator, was able to get the Middlesex Community College Veterans’ Club started. Galgano became the club advisor. As the semester continued, Galgano started the paperwork to get Middlesex Community College to become listed on the “Military Friendly Schools/GI Jobs” website. In the Fall 2011 semester, Middlesex Community College received a certificate and a plaque from Military Friendly Schools/GI Jobs and officially became a “Military Friendly School” and was in the top 20% of military friendly schools nationwide. MxCC received this again in Fall 2012. Middlesex Community College is now in the top 15% of military friendly schools nationwide, and has received this award for 3 years in the Fall of 2013, Fall 2014, and in Fall 2015.

Prior to joining MxCC, Peter worked for AT andT Broadband (formerly TCI), Berlin, CT as the CT Manager of Original Programming, producing and creating shows such as “AT and T Leadership Profiles”, Mayor Mike’s Minute”, “Yes I Can with Crayonman” and “Let Eat” with Prudence Sloane. He also directed 3 crews at hockey games in Hartford and Springfield for the Whalers and the Falcons. These shows were shown up and down the east coast in AT andT Broadband Franchises.

Peter also worked on Long Island for Producers East, where he did work for Canon USA, International Paper, and worked on a documentary for A and E Network called “The First Family of Fireworks” (Fireworks by Grucci).

On November 8, 2011, Peter received the “William J. Pomfret Veteran Community Service Award”. The award was presented by the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce “Honor the Veterans and Support the Troops Committee” in recognition of distinguished service on the part of a veteran of our armed forces to the citizens of Connecticut and selfless devotion to the ideal of commitment to public service.

On November 28, 2012, Peter was inducted into the “Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame”. The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame honors veterans both for their direct service to their country and for making significant contributions to their local communities after they have completed their military service.

On April 29, 2015, Berlin Veterans Commission member Peter Galgano was named “Volunteer of the Year”. The Volunteer of the Year Award of the Economic Development Commission is presented to an individual who has contributed substantial time and energy on a volunteer basis in the Town of Berlin. Galgano “has once again gone above and beyond the call of duty” in the work he put into planning the recently dedicated Veterans Memorial Park near Stop and Shop and The American Legion. Galgano “saved the town thousands of dollars in sign design fees,” said Town Manager Denise McNair and “he added a personal touch to the project that we will all appreciate.” The “American Wars Walkway” recognizes veterans from each of America’s 12 wars, including QR codes with educational information.

Peter is presently active with the following: Co-President, Connecticut State Veterans Memorial Inc., Vice President, Vietnam Veterans of America Connecticut State Council, Board of Directors, Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 120, in East Hartford, the Marine Corps League #781, in New Britain, and the MCL Dept of Connecticut, the VFW Post 10732 in Berlin, CT, the town of Berlin Veterans’ Commission-Secretary, member of the Special Veterans Advisory Committee for Senator Richard Blumenthal, the Veterans’ Outreach Coordinator at Middlesex Community College, the Staff Advisor for the Middlesex Community College Veterans Club, and the OEF/OIF Military Support Committee, at Maj. Gen. Maurice Rose Armed Forces Reserve Center in Middletown.
