The Somers Cultural Commission has the purpose of promoting artistic and cultural programs and activities. ItMore encourages development of and participation in activities, and also offers advice planning and coordinating events in town. The commission sponsors many activities throughout the year. </p> <p>The commission supports a scholarship, sponsors a concert series in the summer and also holds art and photography shows.</p> <p>Meetings are held the second Monday of every month - except July and often December - at 7pm in Piedmont Hall and is open to the public. Many of the events held by the commission are held at Piedmont Hall.</p>

In Ellington, there are two elementary schools -- Crystal Lake and Center School, a combined elementary and intermediate school -- Windermere, a middle school -- Ellington Middle School, and a high school -- Ellington High School.</p> <p>Board meetings are normally held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. All meeting notices are posted in each school, the School Administration Building, the Town Hall, Hall Memorial Library, and on the Web site. Please check postings for appropriate meeting dates and locations.</p>

Northern Correctional Institution

The Northern Correctional Institution in Somers is a level-five maximum security facility situated on a a 20-acreMore plot of land that is adjacent to the Osborn Correctional Institution. Northern was completed in January 1995 and received its first inmates in March 1995.</p> <p>Northern is designed to manage inmates who have shown that they cannot adjust to confinement, posing a threat to the safety of the community, other inmates or staff. The facility provides a secure, structured and humane environment and affords inmates the opportunity to move back to less restrictive facilities through positive behavior and program participation.</p> <p>Northern also houses the death row for the Department of Correction. These inmates were moved to Northern from Osborn in 1995.</p>
