It also responds to all kinds of emergencies, such as accidents and out-of-the-ordinary problems.</p> <p>In addition to its lifesaving duties, the fire department offers classes and programs to help residents learn how to live safer lives. The department also retains a group for sixteen and seventeen year-olds who are interested in fire fighting and emergency medical services.</p>

It covers about nine square miles of Ellington.</p> <p>The department is prepared for cold water rescues, water surface awareness, and off road and hazardous material emergencies in addition to the regular duties of fighting fires. The department also responds to any car accident or other medical emergency.</p> <p>The Crystal Lake Fire Department has engine trucks, trucks that carry water, a light rescue and dive team truck, a forestry truck, a rescue boat and some other service vehicles. The department has a dive team that dives with the Tolland County Divers.</p> <p>The Crystal Lake Volunteer Fire Company No. 2, Inc. was organized on August 27, 1934 and had 35 charter members. There is currently a junior program for 16 through 18 years old who are interested in becoming firefighters. </p>

The…More department has a station on Main Street and also houses some of its trucks on Nutmeg Drive.</p> <p>The department has some engine trucks, a couple forestry trucks, a tanker, a heavy rescue truck, a couple of service vehicles, a special hazards and hazardous material truck, a John Deere gator and trailer, a marine rescue trailer, and special hazards and hazardous materials trailer.</p> <p>In addition to putting out fires, the department also has the capability to deal with hazardous material incidents, water rescues, technical rescues, medical emergencies, emergency and disaster management, emergencies involving weapons of mass destruction, and off road and forest incidents.</p> <p>The department also does fire and public safety education programs for the residents in the town.</p> <p>There are currently 50 firefighters and EMS responders, 19 explorers, and more than 12 non-responding members in the department. To be an explorer, a person must be at least 14 years of age and a graduate of eighth grade. The explorer program goes up through 21 years of age.</p>
