The Northern Correctional Institution in Somers is a level-five maximum security facility situated on a a 20-acre…More plot of land that is adjacent to the Osborn Correctional Institution. Northern was completed in January 1995 and received its first inmates in March 1995.</p> <p>Northern is designed to manage inmates who have shown that they cannot adjust to confinement, posing a threat to the safety of the community, other inmates or staff. The facility provides a secure, structured and humane environment and affords inmates the opportunity to move back to less restrictive facilities through positive behavior and program participation.</p> <p>Northern also houses the death row for the Department of Correction. These inmates were moved to Northern from Osborn in 1995.</p>
