<p>The Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers is a level-three medium security institution. Osborn houses one of the largest inmate populations of the facilities in the state.</p>
<p>At Osborn, there are 17 inmate housing units, each with its own specific institutional function. The unit management system enhances safety and security by limiting inmate mass movement and providing for controlled movement during the daily institutional routines.</p> <p>In the facility, there is an inpatient hospital, a mental health unit, an education program, an inpatient addiction services unit and a correctional industries program. The enterprise program employs inmates who make inmate clothing and mattresses and run a full-service print shop.</p> <p>The facility is also one of three in the state that provides trained hospice volunteers who provide end-of-life care to other inmates.</p> <p>The execution enclosure, where capital punishment is carried out, is located at Osborn.</p> <p>It is named after the Osborn Prison Farm that was established in this area in the 1930s. The prison was opened in November 1963 as a replacement for the Old Wethersfield State Prison. It was known as the Connecticut Correctional Institution-Somers. At the time, it was the state's maximum security prison and reception/diagnostic center for incoming male inmates statewide. In the summer of 1994, it was reorganized as a level-three institution and was renamed Osborn Correctional Institution. In 1995, death row inmates were moved from Osborn to the newly opened Northern Correctional Institution, which is adjacent to Osborn's 550-acre lot.</p>
