Selling During the Holidays

Should you sell during the holiday season or take your property off the market until the New Year?

As the holidays near I have many selling clients ask if they should take their property off the market during the holidays……

My question to them and to you if you are also having the same thought, is “Do you still want to sell?” If the ultimate goal is to sell, my recommendation is to continue to market throughout the holiday seasons.

It is important to keep in mind that activity levels will remain slower than other times of the year. Keep your home as clutter free as possible and decorate minimally. Keep things simple. You can always ask your broker to require a specific time of notice to show - for example, some people request 24 hours notice for showings. If you have a request to show and family staying for the holidays - have them help you clean up and take them all out to lunch. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to show your property.

Consistently, relocating families will take advantage of the holiday break from work and school schedules to check out real estate. If that buyer comes into your market place and you have decided to not market during the holidays you may have lost a perfect opportunity to sell.

If your thoughts are that it might be too big a hassle to sell during this time of year it might be wise to re-eveluate your motivations for selling. As with all aspects of selling and buying real estate, consult with your local Realtor or Broker for guidance and suggestions on selling during the holidays or any time of year.
