"Wreaths Across America" Program, Coming To Honor Somers' Veterans

Somers is now part of the "Wreaths Across America" program, to honor our veterans laid to rest in Somers' cemeteries. This December 14th, a truck will arrive in Somers and pull up in front of the old Somers fire house on Route 190/Main Street. The truck will have wreaths that have been sponsored by friends and families of our honored veterans. The wreaths will then be distributed by volunteers and placed on the individual graves in memory of our honored veterans. There will also be wreaths provided to the Somers American Legion, who in turn will participate in a short ceremony which will be conducted in each of the town's cemeteries in memory of those lives given in defense of our country as well as to honor those veterans that have served their country.

Groups or organizations who would like to help us remember and honor veterans laid to rest in our cemeteries or by those individuals wishing to sponsor a wreath for placement on the grave of their loved one can do so by selecting the following link:  http://give.wreathsacrossamerica.org/site/TR?fr_id=1358&pg=entry#.UfcZz9K1HTo

Wreaths Across America™ (WAA) is a non-profit organization founded by the Worcester family in 2007 as a result of interest in their Arlington Wreath Project. In 2008 and 2009 the United States Congress unanimously decreed the second Saturday of December as Wreaths Across America Day.
WAA’s mission, Remember, Honor and Teach, is carried out in part by placing wreaths on veterans’ graves and having simultaneous ceremonies during the holiday season at locations all over the country and beyond. WAA ceremonies are held at over 500 locations in the USA and 24 offshore sites. WAA also organizes a week of events including international veteran’s tributes, ceremonies at State Houses and a week-long “Veteran’s Parade” between Maine and Virginia stops are made along the way to spread the message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.
