Somers American Legion Post collecting worn American flags for dignified retirement

The American Legion’s Buck - Dubiel Post 101 of Somers is collecting old, worn, tattered, frayed or faded U.S. flags. Send an email or call the post to schedule pickup.

The Buck - Dubiel Post 101 is named in honor of Roy A. Buck, the first Somers resident killed in action during World War I, and Stanley J. Dubiel, the first Somers resident killed in action during World War II.

The flags collected by Post 101 will receive a dignified conclusion to their years of service at a flag retirement ceremony the post will hold in November. Though the organization consists of veterans from all branches of the military and multiple generations of servicemen, its membership has a shared commonality in their reverence for the quintessential symbol of American freedom. The Somers Girl Scouts will also be participating in the ceremony.

According to the U.S. Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” The American Legion is one of the few organizations that regularly retire old flags with a formal ceremony, having first started the tradition in 1937.
