Somers Survives Wild Ride in Class S Baseball Tournament

Spartans prevail 8-7 in extra innings over Wamogo to advance to second round.

Ryan Connor's eighth-inning base hit over a drawn-in outfield drove in Austin Ficara with the winning run as Somers escaped with an 8-7 victory over Wamogo in Class S baseball action Tuesday.

The Spartans appeared to have the game in hand with a 7-3 lead entering the seventh inning, but three walks and a grand slam by Wamogo's Tristan Pepin tied the score and sent the game into extra innings.

After Adam Donovan retired Wamogo in order in the eighth, Ficara reached on a bunt single with one out. Mike Casciano's infield single moved Ficara to second, and Wamogo intentionally walked Brian Hollister, setting up Connor's heroics.

Casciano and Connor each had three hits for the Spartans, while Hollister and Tom Conlon each had two. Conlon drove in three runs, while Hollister and Connor each knocked in a pair.

For Wamogo, Pepin had  a sacrifice fly to go with his grand slam, accounting for five runs batted in. Doug Whipple and Rob Whipple each had a pair of hits.

Ninth-seeded Somers plays at #8 Portland Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
