After opening the season with an uncharacteristic 0-2 record, the Somers High School boys' lacrosse team found its stride against South Windsor Tuesday afternoon with a 13-2 victory.

Spartans head coach Ken McCarthy did little to downplay the importance of Somers - last year’s state Class S runner-up - getting back to its winning ways after dropping contests to Avon and Tolland to open the 2013 campaign.

“We needed this win; this was big for us,” McCarthy said. “We lost to Tolland for the first time ever, and we know we have a great group of kids. ... We just needed to put it together.”

John Albert and Ray McCarthy led Somers with 3 goals apiece, while midfielder Ryan Lynch and attack Sean Tynan each had 2 goals, and Cullen Roberts, Eddie Hill and Kevin Murdoch all had goals.

Goalie Pat Tynan had an excellent game, stopping 7 shots.
South Windsor’s Aiden Cain scored both of the Bobcats’ goals while goalie Mitch Tilghman made 12 saves.

Somers controlled the game from the opening faceoff, taking a 1-0 lead after the first quarter on a Lynch goal from distance.

The Spartans (1-2) took a 4-1 and 6-2 lead into halftime and the start of the fourth quarter, respectively, before scoring 7 consecutive goals.

South Windsor head coach Jon Giordano said that the Bobcats (0-3) gave up too many second chances.

“We just played real sloppy,” Giordano said. “It was a lack of focus, we dropped too many passes. Unforced errors were really the key to the game there.”

Somers hosts on Ellington Thursday. South Windsor will travel to Conard the same day.
