Somers Falls In Class S Lacrosse Tournament

Spartans' season ends with 13-8 loss to St. Joseph.

Every time Somers seemed to gain a little momentum during Thursday's Class S lacrosse matchup, visiting St. Joseph seemed to have a counter.

On two occasions, the Cadets followed a Somers goal with one of their own within 20 seconds. St. Joseph scored four times in a 4:26 span of the second quarter to take an 8-4 lead into halftime, en route to a 13-8 victory and a berth in the quarterfinals.

"They were quick to respond to our scores," Somers coach Ken McCarthy said. "We worked hard to get a score, and it seemed to take so much out of us to get a score then it seemed relatively easy for them to score. They're a very good team fro m a tough conference, and we knew we'd have to play the perfect game today. We played hard and played our best lacrosse today, so I'm really proud of them."

Colin Powell and Jeff Marcantonio each scored three goals for the Cadets, while Ryan Corcoran and Rick Giordano each netted a pair. Mike Aitoro, Josiah Wilson and Travis Yoguez also scored for St. Joseph.

Ray McCarthy led Somers with three goals, while Connor Wyllie added two. Ryan Lynch, Cullen Roberts and Anthony Buttafuco had single tallies for the Spartans.

Mike Braddick earned the win in goal for the Cadets with 15 saves, while Patrick Tynan stopped 16 shots for Somers.

St. Joseph, the number 13 seed, plays at fifth-seeded Old Saybrook Saturday at 3 p.m.
