Mixed Results For Ellington, Somers Competitors Monday

Ellington golf had the most successful outing of the day for the Knights or Spartans, placing fourth in the Division 3 championships.

Ellington and Somers competitors had a busy day Monday, competing in state tournament action in golf, girls tennis and track and field.

Golf
Ellington placed fourth out of 20 teams at the Division 3 championships at Timberlin Golf Club in Berlin, with an aggregate score of 325. The Knights demonstrated remarkable consistency, with just five strokes separating its top player from its fifth. Drew Brennan led the way with a 7-over 79, good for a tie for 16th. Kyle Gresh (81, T-27), Jeff Bird (82, T-29), Greg Ussery (83, T-36) and Jon McPartland (84, T-38) each turned in outstanding efforts.

Somers was not as fortunate, placing 15th out of 20 teams at the Division 4 event at Crestbrook Park in Watertown. Nick Elia was the only Spartan to break 90, firing an 87 to tie for 45th among the 105 players.

Girls Tennis
Hannah Riley of Ellington, seeded 11th, fell in straight sets to sixth-seeded Maddie Stow of Wilton in the third round of the State Open at Yale. Game scores were 6-0, 6-2.

Boys and Girls Track and Field
In the State Open at Willow Brook Park in New Britain, Neal Hulstein of Ellington had the top finish among the locals, placing 10th in the 3200 meters. The Ellington boys 4 x 800 relay team came in 11th, while Luke Alvaro of Somers was 22nd in the triple jump and 23rd in the long jump. For the girls, Alissa Rogers of Ellington finished 15th in the 100 meter hurdles.
