Keene Student from Ellington Scores Winning Goal in 1-0 Match Against Endicott

Brittany Boscarino took the Owls to a shutout victory.

The below posting is a press release from Keene State College.

KEENE, N.H. 9/7/13 – Senior Brittany Boscarino (Ellington, Conn.) broke a scoreless tie with a late-second half goal to lift Keene State College to a 1-0 shutout victory over Endicott College in a non-conference women’s soccer game played at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.

Settling the ball on the right side, Boscarino let fly a perfectly placed shot from 25-yard out that found the top right corner of the net for the only goal of the game with 13:20 to play. “I practiced that shot yesterday and I just went up there and hit it and just tried to go for the corner.  It felt amazing when it went in,” said Boscarino about her second goal of the season. “I thought we were going into overtime because it was a pretty even game.”

After a scoreless first half, the Owls took the play to the Gulls coming out of the break. A few minutes in the second half, senior Kara Pavlidis (Lee) broke in alone, but Endicott junior goalie Katie Donnelly (Madison, Conn.) came way out of her net and smothered her shot.

Later in the half, Donnelly kept it a scoreless game when she stopped an initial drive by senior Jessica Berthiaume (Worcester, Mass.) and then still on the ground, dove and stopped the rebound bid by senior Hayley Kenyon (Exeter, N.H.).

The Owls had several chances to add to their lead following Boscarino’s goals, but Donnelly was up to the challenge, stopping a shot by sophomore Shannon Summers (Keene, N.H.) and a drive by Pavlidis who got free in front of the net.

Keene State’s defense kept the Gulls at bay all game, allowing just one shot on goal.  Senior back Kelsie Baily (Barre, Vt.) used her speed to constantly track down opponent attackers in KSC’s side of the field.  “I just used my speed to shut them down,” said Baily.  “My job is to shield off the ball and work as a unit with my defense.”

The Owls (2-1) bounced back from a less than inspiring 3-0 loss to Framingham State on Wednesday. “Framingham was a pretty rough game, so it was great to come out and show what kind of team we can be when we play up to our potential,” said Baily.

Keene State, which lost to the Gulls in the semifinals of last year’s ECAC tournament, outshot Endicott 23-6.

Junior Torrie Crenson (North Salem, N.Y.) need just one save to notch her first shutout of the season and the fourth of her career.

Donnelly finished the game with nine saves for the Gulls (0-3-1).

Keene State host Middlebury College on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.).  Endicott is at Lasell College on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
