Ice Rescue Training
Somers Career Firefighters conducted yearly ice rescue training at Grower Direct Farm on 01/09/14. We practiced two methods used to rescue people who may have fallen through the ice and can't get out. The first, is to go out onto the ice, get into the water behind athe person, and then secure them with a rope. A signal is given to the rescurers on shore both the person and rescuer are pulled out of the water. The second method, is using an ice rescue sled. With this method the rescurer uses the sled to approach the person in the water, they get the person on the edge of the sled and then use a velcro strap to secure them. The signal is then given to those on the shore and the sled is pulled across the ice into the shore. The department is outfitted with four (4) ice rescue suits and one (1) ice rescue sled.
