Ellington Small Business Profile: Sophie & Lili

This business, run by an Ellington resident, has been around since 2004.

As part of Ellington-Somers Patch's Small Business Saturday series, we've asked local business to tell us a little more about themselves.

Here's the second profile in the series, from Sophie & Lili.

When and how did your business get started?
I started Sophie & Lili in 2004. I was inspired by two-year-old daughter and a vintage wrap skirt pattern. I sewed a few skirts and sold them to a boutique in Avon, CT. They sold pretty quickly, so I designed a website and offered custom styles. Things snowballed and before I knew it, I was selling to boutiques worldwide and producing my clothing line in India, China and Peru!

I changed focus from clothing to dolls in 2009. My dolls are drawn in Adobe Illustrator and then digitally printed on cotton. I have made over 4,000 since I started. I recently licensed the designs to a toy company (North American Bear Co). They handle all the production, marketing, etc. while I focus on the designs.

In addition to my dolls, I offer custom watercolors and cards.

Why did you choose the town you chose to start your business in?
I live in Ellington. :)

What is your business best known for?
My cotton printed dolls.

What's something interesting about your business your customers might not know?
Sophie & Lili were the names of my great grandmothers.

I work full time at an ad agency all throughout the time that I have been in business.
