Windermere School Students Visit Ellington Senior Center

The Rachel's Challenge group the "Senior Center Super Stars" came to the center on Monday to take part in activities with the seniors.

On Monday morning, a group of fifth grade students stopped by the for a visit.

The “Senior Center Super Stars” are a group of approximately 20 students at who are part of the Rachel’s Challenge club. There are several clubs throughout the fifth and sixth grade classes, and the students give up one recess a week to be part of the club.

Rachel’s Challenge is a program in honor of Rachel Scott, the first person killed in the Columbine High School shootings in 1999. According to the Rachel’s Challenge Web site, Scott said, “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion then it will start a chain reaction of the same.”

The Rachel’s Challenge clubs at Windermere are all community oriented, with some focusing in the school and others going outside the school.

The “Senior Center Super Stars” have been doing projects for the seniors all year, and recently invited them to the school for a pasta and bingo night. The students served the seniors, and a student band provided the music.

In a gesture of thanks, the seniors invited the students to come to the center for a visit.

“(The students) were so excited about it,” teacher Allison McKeegan said. McKeegan and fellow teacher Nicole Satagaj run this club.

On this day, the students exercised with the seniors, had some snacks while learning more about the center, and then mingled with the seniors.

Ellington Senior Center Director Erin Graziani was very pleased that the students were able to come to the center, and also raved about the pasta and bingo night that the students hosted.
