Spartans Kick Off Season With a Win

Both soccer teams at Somers High School opened the season with a victory.

Both of the soccer teams at opened the season with a victory.

The boys' team defeated visting East Granby 5-2. Joe Pantuosco had two goals and an assist. Luke Alvaro, Mike Dumas, and Brandon Scanlon all scored for the Spartans. Nick Elia added an assist in the victory.

Noah Fersch scored both East Granby goals.

Jeremy Ricard and Elia combined for eight saves for Somers. Tyler Focke made 10 saves for East Granby.

According to Somers coach Rick Kelley, the reason for this win was a true team effort, with some key defensive efforts from Kyle Foster, Matt Kopec, and Elia, and offensive threats from Pantuosco, Alvaro, and Dumas.

The next game for Somers is Friday at Canton.  

The girls' team won the season opener 6-1 in East Granby. Kylen O'Hearn scored on a direct kick just 90 seconds into the game and Jaclyn O'Grady and Kathryn O'Connor added first half goals.

O'Grady added another in the second half along with Kaitlyn Chatis and Lisa Lorenzi. Erin Pfeiffer added two assists.

The defense was led by the strong play of Kelsey Charette and Caroline Gamble.

Somers will next host Canton on Friday.
