Somers Softball Ousted From Tournament

The Spartans fell to No. 1 Terryville in the semifinals of the Class S state tournament on Tuesday.

The softball team’s road to winning a championship ended in West Haven Tuesday afternoon during the semifinals.

The No. 5 Spartans lost to No. 1 Terryville 3-0, in the Class S state tournament before a crowd of over 100 fans.

Somers kept the Kangaroos (21-2) off the board until the fourth inning when the freshman Sarah Ercoli scored the first run of the game. The Kangaroos’ momentum continued in the fifth inning when they scored their second and third runs.

Somers pitcher JoJo Meunier thinks that two walks during the fourth inning are what killed her team’s chances of winning. She said that she tried to stay focused, but lost that focus.

Meunier was disappointed in losing, but is proud of her teammates and is also proud how far the team progressed in the tournament and how they stuck together. The team faced a lot of tough competition, she said.

Coach Melanie Zamorski was disappointed about the loss, and said a team can’t win without hits.

“The girls did what they could, but couldn’t get any hits today,” she said.

Zamorski said that she is losing three seniors this year - Meunier, Kayla Stetson, and Shelby LaDue - but hopes to get back to the state tournament next year.

Somers finishes the year 19-5.

Terryville will face No. 2 Hale-Ray (20-3) in the championship game.
