Somers High School Names 2012 Valedictorian, Salutatorian

Katie Loughrey and Ryan Geib are the top two students of the Class of 2012.

Katie Loughrey and Ryan Geib have been named valedictorian and salutatorian of the Class of 2012.

Loughrey began earning honors early, receiving the freshman English award, the American Citizenship award, and the Lions Club Silver Bowl (for the highest GPA in the class) her freshman year. Sophomore year, she again received the English award and the Lion’s Club Silver Bowl awards, and also received the sophomore Chemistry award. Junior year, she once again received the English award, and was also the Harvard-Radcliffe Book Award recipient.

She cites her leadership experience as president of the Beta club (2011-2012), treasurer of the Beta club (2010-2011), and student advisory council (2010-2011).

Loughrey volunteers at the and has also participated in Relay for Life events, including attending outside meetings and helping with fundraising.

She is also a member of the drama club and is a member of the International Thespian Society with the title of Honor Thespian (600+ hours), is part of the National Honor Society, participated in the Somers High School Senior Variety Show, and did dance for six years.

Loughrey works at in Enfield and is also a babysitter.

She will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall.

Geib also began collecting honors early, picking up the Introduction to Business award, for excellence in business, and the Science award, for excellence in integrated science, as a freshman. Junior year, he received the Thespian 4 Star honor (over 500 hours participated in drama club), the Cornell University Book Award, and the Lion’s Bowl award. Junior and senior year, Geib was a member of the National Honor Society, and has also made continuous high honors (each year).

He has taken honors and AP science classes, honors English classes, and completed AP U.S. History.

For leadership, Geib attended the 2011 boys state delegate, which was an intensive, week-long leadership camp where he learned about government and leadership development. He is the president of the drama club, was the treasurer as a junior, and was the class president sophomore and junior year.

He worked at the model shop at Lego and has done a lot of volunteer work, including , basketball concessions through NHS, and the town-wide food drive.

Geib has been a member of the prom committee, student government, drama, and played golf as a freshman.

He will be attending Villanova University in the fall.
