Somers Basketball Advances to Quarterfinals

The girls' basketball team will take on No. 2 Capital Prep on Thursday.

On Friday, the girls' basketball team advanced to the Class S state tournament quarterfinals with a 61-50 victory over No. 10 Platt Tech.

Diandra DaRosa led the way for the No. 26 Spartans with 29 points, nine steals, and five assists. Hailee Stetson added 11 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

Samantha Urbon had 14 rebounds and four assists to go with eight points.

Julia Navarro led Platt Tech (15-7) with 20 points.

DaRosa scored 11 second quarter points to help Somers open an eight point lead at the half. Somers opened up the game late in the third quarter as Kathryn LaVallee hit a three-pointer, followed by four points from Brianna Caraballo and a last second three-pointer by Stetson to open up a 16 point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Platt Tech made several runs to cut the lead to nine points, but each time, Somers converted free throws, going 10-for-10 in the fourth quarter.

Somers combined good defense and rebounding by Urbon, Rebecca Novak, and Brianna Caraballo to limit Platt Tech's 6'4" center to only eight points.

Somers now plays No. 2 Capital Prep (17-3) on Thursday.
