Last Minute Field Goal Keeps Ellington-Somers Perfect
After four blowouts this season, the Knights escaped with a narrow win.
The Pequot League battle between the Ellington-Somers and Stafford High School football teams on Saturday had little to do with the teams' records as they entered the contest.
Ellington-Somers entered the game undefeated and tied for first place in the division. Stafford-East Windsor came to the field winless despite several close losses. The teams battled back and forth in a defensive stalemate and a last minute field goal by Mitch Cobb gave the Knights the 10-8 win.
Late in the fourth quarter, Ellington-Somers drove to the Stafford-East Windsor 2 yard line. A fumbled snap and a penalty forced Ellington-Somers back to the 11 yard line. Ellington-Somers called time out and when play resumed, Cobb lined up for the first field goal attempt of his career.
