Somers Coach Ken McCarthy expects the Spartans to be a .500 team as Somers graduated 12 lettermen – nine starters – from last year’s state . Somers finished the season at 19-1.

The Spartans return senior defender Chris Hamilton, who is the captain this season. Hamilton was All-Conference in 2011.

Fellow senior defenders Jason Moustafa and Kiernan Wyllie also return. Senior attacker Russell also returns for the Spartans.

McCarthy says that his team is working hard and they have a great attitude.

“They are getting better everyday,” he said. “Defensively, we have three seniors starting and they will be strong.”

The team weakness is varsity playing time experience.

“It is unknown at this time who our scorers will be,” McCarthy said.

McCarthy calls Avon and Granby the teams to beat because they have many returning players.

Somers Girls' Lacrosse

The girls' team also picked up a win on opening day, defeating visiting Canton 19-6.

For Somers, Katie Morrell led the way with seven goals and Kristen Steidler added six goals.

Karen Trescott and Samantha Gay added two goals each and Chelsea Quint and Micaela Leaska each scored once.

Heather MacLauchlan made four saves in the win.

Somers travels to RHAM on Saturday.

Ellington Girls' Lacrosse

The girls’ lacrosse team also opened the season on Wednesday, falling 13-8 to visiting Granby.

Ellington graduated nine lettermen – five starters – from last year’s 5-9 season.

The captains this season are Emily Cohen, Kelly Conley, and Josie Gerber. Cohen is a senior defender who coach Tim Bosworth calls a “top defender.” Conley is a senior midfielder who did a lot of scoring for the Knights last year. Gerber is also a senior midfielder who Bosworth says has good speed.

Hannah Naumec is a senior attacker who is playing a new position. Bosworth said she was a top defender last season.

The Knights also return senior attacker Oliviana Bailey, and senior goalies Madison Tate and Alyssa Jones. Junior midfielder Bailey Krasinski and junior defender Lisa Deconti also return. Bosworth said that Krasinski has good speed and that Deconti is a top defender.

The Knights will also return sophomore midfielder Olivia Kosilla, who also has good speed. Ellington will also see contributions from fellow sophomore midfielders Sam Salwa and Alexis Daley. Attacker/midfielder Rachel Ziter, also a sophomore, will also play a roll.

Sophomore attackers Amber Agnew, Alison Wylie, and Becca Anderson will also contribute this season. Sophomore defenders Sarah DiResta, Ann Lovallo, Lynsey Blanchette, Jamie Choate, Sarah Rivard, and Rachel Wardrop will also have an impact for the Knights.

Ellington welcomes freshman goalie Ally Letizia, who will look to play a role.

Bosworth says that his team’s strength is speed and that the weakness is scoring. He calls Avon, Granby, and Suffield the teams to beat.
