Knights Overcome Long Layoff; Spartans Fall to Visiting Raiders

The Ellington High School girls basketball team picked up a win in its first game in 10 days. Windsor Locks got the best of the Somers High School girls basketball team.

After not playing a game in 10 days and not practicing for a week, the girls basketball team started slowly but picked up the 47-41 victory over host Granby.

Ellington led 16-14 at the half but picked it up in the third quarter, adding 15 more points. However, Granby (6-8) also scored 15 points in the quarter.

The fourth quarter was the deciding factor with Ellington outscoring Granby 16-12.

Kelly Conley led the way for the Knights with 22 points. Karlee Alves added nine points and Julie Gage eight points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Ellington (11-3) hosts Coventry on Thursday.

The girls basketball team fell 49-37 to visiting Windsor Locks on Tuesday night.

Windsor Locks converted 10-of-14 first half free throws, including a 5-for-5 performance from Mariah Brown who scored 12 first half points.

Somers struggled from the free throw line going 4-of-14, including 2-of-10 in the second quarter.

Ashley Kinney scored 11 first half points for Somers.

The Spartans scored the first five points of the third quarter, but Windsor Locks went on a 7-0 run and the lead fluctuated between eight and 11 points for most of the second half.

Windsor Locks struggled from the line in the fourth quarter missing 13 free throws as Somers scrambled full court, but the Raiders' seven made free throws was enough to keep the game out of reach.

Kinney finished with a game-high 20 points and Samantha Urbon scored six points for Somers.

Brown led Windsor Locks with 19 points, Nicolette LaPierre added 11 and Jessica Kuzmickas had nine in the win.

Somers (5-11) travels to Canton on Friday. Windsor Locks (11-6) travels to Ellington on Friday.
