Kelly Conley Scores 1,000th Point in Ellington Victory; Somers Drops Close One at Windsor Locks

The Ellington High School junior reached the milestone in a victory over host Stafford. The Somers High School girls basketball team came up just a little bit short against the Raiders.

junior Kelly Conley led the Knights to a 48-27 victory over host Stafford on Thursday.

Conley scored 21 points and recorded her 1,000th point. With 5:04 remaining in the third quarter, Conley drained a free throw that gave her 1,000 points in her career.

Conley also had six assists for the Knights.

Julie Gage had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Ellington (15-3).

Lauren Shaw had 12 points for Stafford (4-15). The Bulldogs honored seniors Brianna Heald and Dani Clark.

Ellington hosts Enfield at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Somers

overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to get back in the game but come up just short, falling 40-37 to host Windsor Locks.

Solid first half defense by Windsor Locks contained Somers' Ashley Kinney, but Samantha Urbon hit two key baskets in the latter part of the second quarter to keep Somers within striking distance.

However, Jenna Wojtas hit a basket in the lane to put he Raiders up by 10 at the half.

The third quarter belonged to Somers though. The Spartans turned up their intensity in the quarter, outscoring Windsor Locks 14-5 with scoring from six players - led by Kinney's five points.

In the fourth quarter, Jessica Kuzmickas answered three runs by Somers with three-point shots, keeping the lead between three and four points. Taking advantage of poor free throw shooting by Windsor Locks (4-of-16) and Windsor Locks timeouts, Kinney led the way with six points to give Somers three chances to tie or take the lead, but the Spartans could not convert.

After two more misses, Somers had one chance with one second left, but a half court shot fell short.

Kinney led all scorers with 16 points and Samantha Urbon had 10 rebounds for Somers (5-14).

Kuzmickas led Windsor Locks with 14 points and Mariah Brown added 11. Nikki LaPierre had 17 rebounds for the Raiders (12-8).

Somers closes out the season at Enfield on Friday. The game begins at 5:30 p.m. Windsor Locks will now wait to find out its tournament opponent.
