Ellington, Somers Students Score Higher Than State Average in SATs

More students took college-bound standardized tests in 2013 over 2012, the state announced in a news release.

More students in Connecticut took the SATs in 2013 when compared to last year and, apart from a slight uptick in writing, test-takers posted similar average scores when compared to 2012.

The College Board released the latest standardized test results for the SAT, PSAT and AP scores, saying that the increased number of students taking these college-bound tests signify an upward trend. The organization also said there is an increasing diversity among the test-takers.

"Higher participation rates on college entrance exams mean that more Connecticut public high school graduates are aiming for college, which is one of our state's key goals," said Stefan Pryor, commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Education. "It is especially encouraging that participation rates among students of color continue to rise in Connecticut."

There were slight improvements made statewide in critical reading, which increased by one point to 499, as well as writing which ticked up two points to 504. Mathematics, however, dropped one point to 503.

As far as Ellington and Somers go, students in both towns scored well above the state averages, ranging from an average of 517 in Ellington for writing up to 533 in Somers for math (full results are listed below).

Also, a majority of AP tests in both towns ended with scores between a 3 and a 5.
