Ellington-Somers Remains Unbeaten

The Knights held off rival Avon to improve to 8-0 and clinch a playoff berth.

The saying goes "good things come to those who wait."

With the recent storm the - football team was forced to wait two weeks to take on rival Avon High School in a key Pequot Uncas division game.

It was worth the wait as Ellington-Somers came away with a 14-5 victory on Monday.

Ellington-Somers entered the game undefeated while Avon (6-3) came in knowing it had never lost to an Ellington squad.

Avon struck first with a field goal. Ellington-Somers’ Jason Moustafa put the Knighs aheadwith a 3-yard run for a touchdown, and Mitch Cobb blasted through the extra point.

Defense was the order of the day thereafter. Avon pressed the attack with the relentless running of quarterback Colin Moore, while Ellington-Somers' defense held tough on several fourth downs.

Luke Levasseur and Sean Tynan lead the Ellington-Somers defense along with a timely interception from defensive back Mike Casciano.

The Ellington-Somers offense featured 85 yards rushing from Mitch DiResta and a 2-yard touchdown surge from quarterback Bryan Rider.

With this win, Ellington-Somers (8-0) clinches a spot in the state football tournament, a first for the Knights.

The Knights have a short week as they next play at Housatonic on Saturday. If the knights prevail, a possible battle of the unbeaten teams of Coventry and Ellington-Somers is shaping up for Thanksgiving Day at Coventry High School.
