Ellington Board of Education to Hold Special Meeting

The board is inviting the public to come out and talk about possible changes to the school calendar.

The has decided to hold a special meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. to consider revisions to the school calendar.

Because of all the snow days the district has had, some changes need to be made.

One of the recommendations is to make Monday, Feb. 21 and Tuesday, Feb. 22 - February break - educational days.

The other recommendation is to make the school year 180 days.

When the calendar was made, the last day of school was to be Tuesday, June 14 with a graduation date of Friday, June 17. Eight snow days were allowed for, moving the final day of school, and graduation, to be on Friday, June 24.

Any cancellations beyond the eight days would be made up during April vacation. As of Friday, there have been nine snow days. As it stands, graduation would be June 24, school will be held on Monday, April 18, and any further cancellations would further cut the April vacation.

The two recommendations are intended to eliminate the need to disrupt the April vacation and to hopefully end the school year prior to the warm and humid weather.

As a result of the approval of both recommendations, the last instructional day for students would be Tuesday, June 21. Graduation could occur anytime between June 21 and June 24. This also assumes no more cancellations.

The recommendations would create a three-day window of Wednesday, June 22 and June 24 should there be further cancellations. Formal action to set a graduation date would not occur until after April 1.
