Coventry Tests Somers But Spartans Prevail

The Patriots softball team kept the game close but Somers came away with the victory.

The softball team defeated host Coventry 6-4 on Wednesday but it wasn't easy.

With the game tied, Somers got two runs in the top of the seventh sparked by a single from Marisa Forti. Forti then advanced to second on an error and was sacrificed to third by a Kylen O'Hearn bunt.

Shelby LaDue then got a hard hit up the middle to drive in the go-ahead run. Allie Dubanoski followed with a single and JoJo Meunier added another double to score LaDue from second.

Coventry had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second off a RBI single by Josie LoRicco but Somers got four runs in the top of the third on a 2-run double from Meunier.  

Coventry (6-4) then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth off of singles by LoRicco and Nicole Uccello, a walk and three errors by the Somers defense.

Meunier got the win, allowing four runs - only one of them earned, four walks and four hits. She struck out 14. 

Somers improves to 8-0 and travels to Windsor Locks on Thursday.
