The Christmas Story: Where All Your Dreams Can Come True

The fulfillment of Joseph and Mary's hopes and aspirations will not come from their career, marriage or reputation. God is about to put all of these things in jeopardy on account of one person.

Everybody seeks fulfillment in someone or something.  People wake up every morning on a quest.  For some, their thirst is unquenchable.  Some search for happiness in a relationship, while others look to a career to supply this seemingly unattainable state.  Such people search endlessly for their soul mate.  Despite promising starts, these relationships fail to deliver the goods.  Inevitably, their relationships end badly.

The same goes for the serial job hunter.  Brimming with optimism, they take yet another new job.  Within weeks, the usual case of ennui settles in and their quest resumes.  For others, however, their journey does not take them outside their home.  No, it leads them to a sofa parked in front of their flat screen TV.  For such souls, fulfillment is derived vicariously.  Since their pursuit has proved unsuccessful, they prefer to watch others hunt for it instead.

History is full of people who had dreams that never came to fruition.  At some point, reality and responsibilities set in and the business of putting food on the table for themselves and their family became the reason they got out of bed every morning.

As we turn to the Christmas story, I can’t help wondering what kind of dreams Joseph and Mary must have had.   Perhaps, they were relatively humble like having a little home in rural Galilee where they could raise a family together.  In time, I am sure Joseph hoped he might become a master craftsman whose services would be in demand.  Over time, I am sure as God-fearing people they aspired to be respected one day by those in their synagogue as valuable servants of the Lord.

As we turn to the beginning of the Christmas story in Matthew 1:1-25, we see that God has a plan for Joseph and Mary beyond their wildest dreams.  The fulfillment of their hopes and aspirations will not come from their career, marriage or reputation.  God is about to put all of these things in jeopardy on account of one person and one person alone:  Jesus.  If you’re looking for your dreams to be fulfilled you need look no further than Jesus.
