Somers School Board Adjusts Calendar

A professional development day in March was added back to the academic calendar.

Because of all the snow the state has received this winter, school districts all across the state have had to rework their school calendars.

On Monday, Somers Superintendent of Schools Maynard Suffredini proposed adjusting the calendar to eliminate the March 14 professional development day. The approved the proposal so the students will now have a full day of school that day.

Before that day was added back to the calendar, the last day of school in town would have been Thursday, June 23. It will now be Wednesday, June 22.

The graduation date, set for Tuesday, June 21, will remain the same.

Suffredini also proposed that if the town has enough snow days to push the school year into the final week of June, that those days would be taken away from the April vacation week.

As it stands, the town can have two more snow days before school would have to be pushed into the last week of June – therefore taking away from April vacation.

“This gives us the buffer that hopefully we will need,” Suffredini said. “Hopefully we will not have to impact any of the vacations.”

Suffredini said that there are pros and cons of using vacation days, but noted that during the February break, the will be coming to the campus to deal with building issues that remain and to clear the parking lots.

“The only reasonable one that would give us plenty of time would be the April vacation,” he said.

So far, the district has had seven snow days and everyone hopes that there are and that the calendar won’t have to be adjusted any further.
