Somers Receives FEMA Money from October Snowstorm

The town received a significant amount, allowing it to only use a small amount from the fund balance.

As we approach the year anniversary of the October snowstorm, the town of Somers has received its reimbursements from FEMA.

The town received $961,357.52 and after the storm had made two appropriations in the total amount of $1,100,000. This means that the town only had to use $138,642.48 from the fund balance.

“I am very proud of my staff for their overall response to and coordination of clean up efforts of Storm Alfred as well as for their superb documentation of all costs associated with the incident,” said Somers First Selectwoman Lisa Pellegrini. “The result is a substantial FEMA reimbursement.”

According to Pellegrini, the town has already received most of the money and is only waiting on $22,000 more.

During the storm, the town used local contractors in the street cleanup operation rather than using AsheBritt – the state bid contractor.

“It was a win/win situation as it enabled us to keep local firms working and we were able to greatly control our overall cleanup and monitoring costs,” said Pellegrini.

While Pellegrini and the rest of the Somers staff has had practice at filing FEMA paperwork – and has become good at it – they don’t want to have to do it again.

“Hopefully we will not have another large incident for a very long time,” said Pellegrini.
