Somers Holding Public Meeting on $4.27M Bonding Projects

The town is looking to purchase several items using funds obtained through state bonds.

The Town of Somers will be holding a public hearing this Thursday, Oct. 24, for a town meeting on spending $6.194 million and bonding $4.276 million on various capital improvement projects.

The hearing will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Somers Town Hall auditorium.

The items up for discussion include $2.47 million for school roofs, fire alarms and a generator, $3.1 million for road improvements, $565,000 for the purchase of a tanker truck and $53,000 for a senior shuttle bus. These all equal $4.27 million.

This is in addition to a $1.045 million authorization that was already approved at a previous town meeting for the purchase of two fire tricks. Adding this to the tally the total cost for the town to bond the projects would be $5.32 million.

The town said it would pay $7.23 million for the total project, with $5.32 coming from bonds. The cost difference would be balanced out with state grants.

Somers residents would have to approve the expenditures at a referendum, which the town plans to set for Nov. 5, the same day as the municipal election.
