Somers Finance Board Recommends Smaller Tax Increase Than Expected

New budget recommendation is 0.40 mils less than the proposed figure from last month's public hearing.

The Somers Board of Finance approved a recommended budget of $29.4 million for fiscal year 2013-14 at a meeting Monday night.

If approved, the recommended budget would mean a tax increase of 0.25 mils, considerably less than the proposed increase of 0.65 mils that had been put forth at a public hearing in April.

The new recommended mill rate of 23.37 would mean an increase of about $50 per year for the average home in Somers.

“I'm very pleased at what came out of the Board of Finance meeting,” First Selectman Lisa Pellegrini said in a news release. “This budget would allow us to preserve both the town’s operating and education budgets yet with a smaller tax increase. Everybody wins.”

In the release, Board of Finance Chairman James Persano said, “The members of the Board of Finance worked very hard to consider everyone’s interests. We’re sensitive to the fact that citizens are still going through challenging economic times but that they still desire town services and a quality education for our children.”

The Annual Town Meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Auditorium. A June 4 referendum date is being proposed by the Board of Selectmen.
