Somers Budget of $29.4 Million Passes at Referendum

More than 65 percent of those who voted approved the budget for fiscal year 2013-14.

A small turnout of just under 10 percent of registered Somers voters approved the town's proposed budget of $29.4 million for the 2013-14 fiscal year at a referendum Tuesday.

Of 6,638 registered voters in town, only 662, or 9.97 percent, turned out to cast their ballots.

431 residents voted in favor of the budget, while 231 were opposed, according to figures provided by Registrar of Voters David McCaffrey.

The approved budget is just under $152,000 more than the current year's allotment, an increase of 0.5 percent. The new mil rate is 23.37.

The school system accounts for $20.4 million in the budget, while the town side is just under $9 million.
