Another $400,000 will be devoted towards building a new senior center in Ellington, after voters passed a referendum for the funding Tuesday night, with a margin of 114 votes.

The final tally came to 418 votes "yes," and 304 "no," according to referendum moderator Janet Marshall.

"It's great to see the town come through again tonight," said Wayne Reynolds, the chairman of the Senior Center Steering Committee. "The funds will bring back the amenities that our seniors deserve."

Features such as automatic door openers could have been cut from the project without the additional funding, Reynolds explained. The entirety of the senior center construction will now cost $2.9 million, according to the Town of Ellington website.

The new center will located at 40 Maple Street, which is owned by the town.
Reynolds said that the site is currently being surveyed, but that the groundbreaking has not yet occurred.

The original $2.5 million in bonding for the senior center was approved at a February 2012 referendum. A second referendum was set once bids for the projects came in above the $2.5 million mark.

According to Marshall, there was a 7-percent voter turnout for the Tuesday referendum.
