Ellington Selectmen Vote to Accept State Funding For Housing, Building Addition

The town was recently awarded two grants valued at $450,000 and $250,000.

The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously Tuesday to accept a pair of state grants, totaling $700,000, for two separate public projects.

The first is a $450,000 Small Cities Grant, which will go toward Ellington establishing a regional housing rehabilitation loan program to help low- and moderate-income homeowners in Ellington, Somers and Suffield.

The second is a $250,000 grant from the Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) for the construction of a 1,000-foot addition to the town's Human Services Building.

"This funding is a great example of how the tax dollars we pay can be invested back into our community in a positive manner," Republican state Rep. Christopher Davis said in a statement in August. "The funds from this program will greatly improve the quality of service provided for the families in our community who may be in need of any assistance.”

The board did not specify when work would begin for either project.
