Ellington Proposing Outdoor Smoking Ban on Town Properties

Officials mull over stricter rules in outdoor venues.

The Town of Ellington is considering an ordinance that would regulate smoking in outdoor town-run public areas, such as athletic facilities, beaches, parks and playgrounds.

At a public hearing Monday on the ordinance, resident Erin LaFleche told Fox CT News that she supported the proposal.

“I think it’s a great idea. I mean, they’ve banned it from restaurants and bars," LaFleche said.

If the ordinance is adopted, signs would be posted to warn residents that a location is subject to the ordinance, and the Ellington Police Department would be responsible for its enforcement. Violators could face up to a $90 fine, according to town documents.

The Ellington Board of Selectmen is now tasked with deciding whether the proposal will move forward, FOX CT reports.
