Vernon Man Accused of Stealing Grant Money While Working at UConn

Corey Schmitt, who worked for a period of time in Ellington, had previously been arrested on slew of narcotics fraud charges in South Windsor, Vernon and Bloomfield.

A Vernon man, recently arrested by South Windsor police, is accused of playing fast and loose with state and federal money while working as a student employee in the University of Connecticut’s financial aid office.

According to a Hartford Courant report, Corey Schmitt, 24, allegedly transferred $73,000 in financial aid to students before the money was authorized and $2,200 to his own account.

Schmitt was arrested Friday and charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, unauthorized access to a computer system with fraudulent intent and three counts of computer crime.

Schmitt faces a host of pending charges out of Vernon, South Windsor and Bloomfield, including a recent spate in which he allegedly illegally obtained prescription drugs. The Courant reports he used his temporary job in an Ellington doctor’s office to call in a prescription for oxycodone and Vicodin at the South Windsor Target.

Vernon police charged Schmitt with driving under the influence and failure to drive right in April, criminal impersonation and attempt to illegally obtain narcotics in September.

He also faces charges of driving under the influence from May 2013 and possession of narcotics in June out of Troop D and fraud and attempt to obtain narcotics at the end of July out of Bloomfield.

Schmitt is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 3, 7, 13, 14 and 25 on the charges.
